The word “garage” comes from the French word “garer” which interprets to “to store.”

At first, garages were shaped after carriage houses, and homeowners would build small shed-like structures to store their cars in.

Sliding doors were invented in the early 1920s, which meant you’d need a bigger garage for the door to fit properly.

So, five years later, in 1926, Johnson developed the electrical garage door openers.

By the 1940s, architects began incorporating garage doors into their home designs, and in the 1960s, garages started to grow to accommodate more than one family vehicle.

In 1954, to use the post-World War II housing boom, Alliance entered the garage door market by manufacturing the first mass-produced, radio-controlled domestic garage door opener.

After World War II, garage door openers were bulky and expensive.

In 1958, it launched the first screw-drive opener, and later in the 1970s, it produced a split rail garage door that could be sent unassembled for the do-it-yourself market.
