How Did The City Of Colorado Springs Come To Be?
The city of Colorado Springs, located in central Colorado, is a relatively young city. It was established in 1859 by General William Jackson Palmer and grew rapidly due to the influx of settlers drawn to the picturesque landscape, mild climate and close proximity to mining settlements in the nearby Rocky Mountains.
For several years, the town was known as "Fountain Colony" because of its numerous artesian wells. In 1871, it was renamed for Springs Creek which ran through Pikes Peak Park at the base of the mountain that dominates the skyline; Colorado Springs became official with incorporation three years later.
During this time period, the city saw tremendous growth and development bolstered by mineral springs discovered near Garden of Gods. The first schoolhouse, newspaper and church were all established in the 1870’s. In 1888 the Colorado Springs Electric Railway was built connecting downtown with the Garden of Gods.
In the 20th century, Colorado Springs continued to expand rapidly due to its status as a key military installation and highly regarded resort destination. It became home to several large Air Force bases including Peterson Air Force Base which brought thousands of personnel to the area as well as major defense industry contractors like Boeing, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Raytheon. The city is also home to the US Olympic Training Center that hosts over 450 athletes each year from around the world.
